Major Cycle Routes in Jeopardy

uni-150317-T2-3

PLEASE be polite when writing to Councillors. The point is to win them over, not antagonize them. Personal attacks, name calling, vilifying are not how we win people over.

If you have been hit, or nearly hit, or find Ferry Road intimidating, let them know. Safety is key. Removing on street parking will both give cyclists a safer space and make it easier for all road users to see each other.

All the Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Cte members need to know that people support safe cycling.

Support staff’s recommendation for the Ferry Road cycle lanes as part of the Heathcote Expressway Major Cycle Route

The NIMBY attacks on cycleways are stalling and may well preclude major cycleways which meet Council’s own Cycle Design Guidelines. Unless people who cycle get active, the promised cycle routes will be far less safe and possibly not even constructed.

In the latest instance commercial interests along with a church on Ferry Road are insisting that on street parking is more important than safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Email Councillors and members of the ITE committee to let them know that on street parking is never more important than people’s lives. Ask them to support staff’s recommendation for the Ferry Road cycle lanes as part of the Heathcote Expressway Major Cycle Route.

and Adding in the mayor Lianne Dalziel, mayor@ccc.govt.nz will also let her know that discussions with downtown landlords to increase on street parking while degrading cycle infrastructure has a political downside.

CCC staff will report on what’s up on Tuesday 13 June 9AM in the Council Function Room on Hereford Street. Being there to support the staff recommendation would be appreciated. Council’s Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Cte will be hearing oral presentations on Thursday 29 June at 1PM. You can request your 5 minutes to plead for safe easy to use cycleways by sending an email to samantha.kelly@ccc.govt.nz
